Historical note
Peter Regier (1851-1925) was born in Prussia to Peter
Regier (1825-1897) and Maria Wiebe (1831-1888) on January 14, 1851.
Peter Jr. married Anna Enss on December 16, 1873 and made their home in
Rueckenau, Marienburg, Prussia. He followed his father and other
relatives into the ministry of the church when he was elected in 1879
and then ordained as Elder in 1879 by his father. Unhappy with the
pressure for young people to join the military he moved to Canada in
1893. Many others followed him. Their first location in Canada was in
Gretna, Manitoba where they stayed for the first year, after which they
settled in Tiefengrund, Saskatchewan. He continued in his role as Elder
and other churches became subsidiaries of the Rosenorter Mennonite
church. He was one of the participants in the meeting which formed the
Conference of Mennonites in Canada in 1902. He died on April 11, 1925.
Scope and content note
This fonds consists of sermons delivered by Peter Regier
(1851-1925), some of which were from the sermons of Peter Regier
(1825-1897), his father, and other ministers. Of special significance
is a family diary from Prussia covering the years 1851 to 1893. The
fonds has files containing other documents and family research
materials such as a 1994 photo of the family reunion as well as a 1978
interview of Peter Regier's daughter conducted by Lawrence Klippestein
about early life in Canada. The fonds also contains materials related
to Peter Regier's role in the wider Mennonite church community such the
1902 photo of the founding of the Conference of Mennonites in Canada,
minutes of the Tiefengrund Mennonite Church Christian Endeavor meetings
from 1908 to 1911 and an early constitution of the Rosenorter Mennonite
Church of Saskatchewan
